Name: Adina Diaz
Where do you live: Echo Park. Los Angeles, CA
You are a spa owner and skin car guru, how did you get into the business: I have worked my way up for 11 1/2 years in the spa industry. When I first started I worked at a skincare school, I did skincare trade shows, day spa, spa resorts, medispa, cosmetic surgery center and now my own facility! I have paid my dues!
How did you discover green beauty: When I was a little girl growing up in Tucson Arizona I used to pick the prickly pear fruit off the cactus and make lipstick and blushes. Little did I know I was being green and natural but it felt right.
Why did you decide to use only natural and organic products on your clients: I was very blessed that I went to an all natural skin care school back home in Tucson, Arizona. There we learned how to perform skincare and body treatments using only natural, holistic, organic and green products. I have always held onto a natural and holistic lifestyle myself, it only made sense to do that for my clients. I wanted the best products out there for myself and I wanted to give my clients the best products out there. I never compromise in my health or theirs.
What advice would you share with someone who is interested in transitioning their beauty regime: Baby steps. Don't feel overwhelmed or rushed. Do your research. There are a lot of products out there that claim to be green and natural and unfortunately are not. Make sure you're supporting the brands that deserve the support and are true to what they say. And it's OK to buy samples of products. Try them out first, make sure you don't have sensitivities or allergic to any of the products as well.
You gave me great tips to improve my skin when I came in to get a facial. I know everyone’s skin is different but is there one tip you would recommend to all skin types across the board: Drink nine glasses of water per day please! And it doesn't matter what skin type you have you have to wear a moisturizer every morning and every evening. I've seen a world of a difference with JUST those two tips above.
In your opinion, what’s the best way to get rid of an unexpected breakout: Breakouts are not unexpected they been brewing for a few days if not a week. The best way to deal with an unexpected break out is to prevent breakouts. If you know you're going to start your period do an Organic Honey Mask (Lotus Moon Skincare.) If you're working out a lot, double your water intake. If you've been traveling use a D2O Hydrating Mist. These tools will help you keep your skin and in check and prevent breakouts. However, if there's a break out that creeps up, my go to weapon is Tonic Active Spot Treatment. I call it my little blue magic bottle. All of my clients rave about how powerful this product is. It's a liquid form of salicylic acid and a little goes a long ways. You just use a Q-tip to dip into the bottle and spot treat on the exact areas. A great mask that almost everybody has in their cupboards is Raw Honey and Organic Turmeric Powder. Mix together 1 teaspoon of each (equal parts) and leave on the skin for five minutes.*
Daily Makeup Routine: Plain Jane Beauty Makeup: Time To Prime, Creme Corrective Sunflower, Creme Minerals in the shade I Am Joyful, Conceal Stick Moonstone for highlighting, Pressed Powder in I am Joyful, Eyebrows in Taupe, Just Mascara, Bronze Ambition, Sheer Translucent Finishing Powder, D2O Hydrating Mist and Color Stick Lipstick Naked Truth.
Favorite high-end beauty product: My current obsession is my skin devices LightStim and My Skin Buddy. Both are powerful LED light therapy hand devices you can use at home. They're going to be a little more expensive however they're going to have more effective and last longer than a cheaper LED light brought online.
Favorite drugstore item: Toms Toothpaste till I die. Lol.
What one beauty brand that you think everyone should know about: Plain Jane Beauty! There are so many reasons why this make up line should be known. First the color range! This product is made for everyone! People with the fairest of the skin tones to the darkest of the skin tones. No one is left out. No one is excluded. Having color range accessible in the Green makeup community is HUGE. This make up is completely dimethicone free, no animal testing, made with plant oils, made in America and even is packed with antioxidants! It's all vegan and gluten-free as well. It's all I wear every single day and I get compliments all the time how dewy and hydrate my skin looks. Plus every single shade is a different name that is self affirming. I am number 6 "I am Joyful." I am all about that self-affirmation you guys!
One beauty product you can’t be with out: I cannot live without Lotus Moon Skincare Cherry Blossom Healing Soothe Balm. I have rosacea and this product year-round helps control and calm down my sensitive skin. Made with Willowherb, Shea Butter and Gotu Kola it's super calming. I use it as my night creme because it's super thick. My clients actually love this product as well there's a bunch of reviews on it on my Yelp.
You have beautiful skin. How do you take care of it: It's all about consistency and having a good skin care routine. To have beautiful skin you have to be consistent. Think about it this way, anybody that's trying to achieve a six pack wouldn't go to the gym once a week right? You got to stay consistent and on routine, I can't say it enough!
Hair care must haves: I make my own Apple Cider Vinegar hair rinse and I do it weekly. This helps with build up, break outs along the scalp and forehead area. I get a 1 ounce spray bottle and mix half apple cinder vinegar and half spring water. Shake and spray onto dry hair. Leave 5-10 minutes then rinse out!
Go-to fragrance: I don't use fragrances I use essential oil's mixed together. My favorite essential oils rollers are from Aura Cacia. I particularly love the Chakra Balancing Aromatherapy Enlightening Crown roller. It's such an exotic blend I love it.
Go-to shop for green beauty: I would have to say MY SHOP! Everything I sell in my spa is everything I use at home and truly believe in. I made it a one stop shop. Other then that the usual: Spouts, Wholefoods, local farmers markets and flea markets.
Beauty Secret: Always ask your threader or waxer to clean your eyebrows with Witch Hazel before the service ! I can't tell you enough how much this prevents any irritation or breakouts.
Why do you think self-care is so important: You are so special. There is only one of you in the whole entire world. Why wouldn't we take care of ourselves? We are also precious. If you feel good you look good.
Who inspires you: I would have to say I am truly blessed to have incredibly strong, independent and inspiring women in my life. Every day each and everyone of them inspire me to be better, to do better and to give more. I really want to emphasize how women and women of color can build their own businesses and can make it to the top without putting other people down.
Final thought: Don't fake the funk. Be you. Be authentic. And spread positive love!
